Histoire d'un petit village de Touraine entre 1788 et 1789, à la veille de la Révolution française, avec son seigneur, ses paysans aisés, ses pauvres. Les paysans aisés, expulsés des pâtures communales par le comte, lui intentent un procès. Guillaume Coquard participe avec les autres villageois a la rédaction des cahiers de doléances. À la veille de la convocation des États généraux, le village perd son procès. La nuit du 4 août 1789 les députés votent l'abolition des privilèges. Les paysans pourront les racheter. Mais les plus pauvres s'interrogent : avec quoi ?
