Mariée contre son gré à François Laurin, un paysan brutal et jaloux, Edith est une femme très sensible. Au cours d'une fête dans un village de Provence, elle rencontre Jean Diaz, un poète pacifiste à la santé fragile. Ils se sentent irrémédiablement attirés l'un vers l'autre. Mais la guerre éclate. Comble du hasard, Jean et François se retrouvent côte à côte dans les tranchées. Les deux hommes ne tardent pas à se réconcilier et à découvrir ensemble les horreurs de la guerre. Ils se réconcilient mais François est tué tandis qu'Edith est victime de la barbarie teutonne...
